What is Scratch for kids?

Scratch is a visual programming language for children: instead of typing code, kids snap together colourful blocks to make characters move, talk and react. Each block is a real programming idea, so children learn how code works without getting stuck on spelling or punctuation.

In Codinzy's live Scratch classes, your child builds games, animations and interactive stories with a tutor, and learns the ideas every programmer uses: loops, conditions, variables and events. It is the first step most of our students take before moving on to Python.

Why parents choose this course

  • No typing or experience needed: ideal for a first coding course.
  • Every lesson ends with something your child made and can show.
  • Builds the logic and problem-solving that later languages rely on.

Scratch Programming course curriculum

The stages the course moves through, over 32 lessons. After the free class the tutor sets your child's starting point and pace, so nobody repeats what they already know.

  1. Stage 1

    First steps with blocks

    • Sprites, the stage and costumes
    • Motion, looks and sound blocks
    • Events: when clicked, when key pressed
  2. Stage 2

    Loops and decisions

    • Repeat and forever loops
    • If / else conditions
    • Sensing: touching, colours, the mouse
  3. Stage 3

    Variables and game logic

    • Scores, lives and timers with variables
    • Broadcast messages between sprites
    • Random numbers for surprise
  4. Stage 4

    Games, animations and stories

    • Designing a game from idea to play test
    • Animated stories with scenes and dialogue
    • Debugging: finding and fixing mistakes
  5. Stage 5

    Final project

    • Plan and build an original game or story
    • Share it and explain how it works
    • Next step: moving to Python

Skills your child will gain

  • Loops
  • Conditions
  • Variables
  • Events
  • Debugging
  • Game design
  • Storytelling
  • Logical thinking

Scratch Programming projects for kids

Every lesson is project-based: your child builds real things from the first classes and finishes with a portfolio of their own work.

  • Visual block-based coding
  • Build games and animations
  • Interactive storytelling projects

Project ideas from this course

  • Color Game

A colour game coded with Scratch blocks, by Mohammad N., Grade 5.

  • Catch game

A falling-objects game with a score and lives.

  • Animated story

Scratch Programming classes: questions parents ask

What age is the Scratch Programming course for?

It's designed for ages 7+ (grades 2-8). In the free trial class the tutor checks your child's level and confirms it's the right fit before you decide anything.

What age is best to start Scratch?

Most children start at 5 to 7 with visual, block-based coding such as Scratch. The course is for grades 2–8, and the tutor checks your child's level in the free class.

What comes after Scratch?

Usually Python. Scratch teaches the ideas (loops, conditions, variables); Python uses the same ideas in real typed code.

Does my child need any prior experience?

No. This is a beginner course: your child starts from zero and the tutor adapts every lesson to their pace.

How do the live Scratch Programming classes work?

Every class is taught live by a real tutor, never pre-recorded, and your child keeps the same tutor every lesson. Choose private 1-on-1 classes (45 minutes, 2–3 a week) or a small group of 2–4 students (60 minutes, 2 a week), scheduled in your time zone. The full course is 32 lessons over about 4 months.

How much do Scratch Programming classes cost?

Plus is $6 a class (groups of 3–4), Premier $12 (groups of 2–3) and Prime $15 (private 1-on-1), in US dollars. You pay only for the classes your child takes, and the first class is a free trial.

Is there a certificate?

Yes. On completion your child earns the Scratch Programming Fundamentals certificate, STEM.org accredited, as a downloadable PDF and a shareable digital badge.

What does my child need for the classes?

A laptop or desktop computer with a webcam, a microphone and a stable internet connection, and an up-to-date Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge. The tutor helps set everything up in the first class.

What if we want to stop midway?

You only pay for the classes your child takes: a full refund if no live class has been completed, and a pro-rata refund at any point after that, to your original payment method.
